Week 26 - March 19-23

3/22/2018

Upcoming Events:
 - No school Thursday 29 March through Monday 2 April
 - Student-Led Conferences Friday 6 April

Check out our new unit - How the World Works!!
Home learning task choices are linked into the overview document.  Each week, students are to complete one reading response and one choice learning activity.  There's always something to chose!!

This week we started digging in to our new unit by exploring informational texts, both how and why we read them.  We used that process to reflect on how we take notes and remember the important information we've learnt.  In Math, we're sharing what we know about time and how to read a analog clock.  We visited our Reading Buddies on Wednesday and they presented their puppet plays for us.  All week long, we practiced for assembly and on Friday - we were awesome!!
Thanks for joining us for our show!!

Sign-up for Student-Led Conferences

Student-Led Conferences- Friday, April 6th

The Elementary will host Student-Led Conferences on Friday, April 6th.

What can you expect?
  • Students will lead parents through their own individual learning experiences.
  • Each classroom will host up to 4 student led-conferences per hour time slot.
  • There will be 15-minute breaks between each session to allow parents to move to their next child’s conference (and to allow the teacher to ready the room for the next group).
  • The in-class part of the conference will last up to 45 minutes, which can either be preceded or followed by visits to the student’s single-subject classes and other learning spaces around the school. (There are no separate sign-ups for these visits.)
  • Conferences may be conducted in English or in a student’s home language, whichever is best for students and parents.

Things to keep in mind:
All parents and students are expected to attend their conference time. We will not have regular school on April 6- although attendance at the scheduled conference (during the times you sign up for) is mandatory.

Teachers (and students!) will not host Student-Led Conferences outside of this already- established day.

As was mentioned at Back to School night in August, parents are welcome to schedule other times to meet with teachers regarding their children. The conferences scheduled on the ES Calendar- when students are not attending a regular school day- require student and parent presence to ensure we meet our collaborative learning goals.

Sign-Ups are Now Open!
DIRECTIONS FOR SIGNING UP:
Signing up is simple via PowerSchool.

Week 24 - March 5-9

3/11/2018

Upcoming Dates:
 - Grade 3 Assembly, Friday 23 March at 8:45am
 - Tentative Grade 3 Field Trip, Wednesday 28 March, all day; more info to come asap.
 - Student-Led Conferences, Friday 6 April.  No school for students; student only on campus for conferences.

This week in 3D:
 - We deepened our morning community time by addressing our every day conflicts and 'stepping into shoes' to see other perspectives and brainstorm solutions.
 - We decomposed speeches to better understand what makes a persuasive argument.  We used that knowledge to write a persuasive letter to Ms. D for our role in the upcoming assembly.
- We continued our work with fractions by 'playing' with fraction tiles to explore equivalent fractions.
 - We continued our character analysis in reading by documenting evidence for our understanding of character traits.
 - We practiced reading with expression with our Grade 1 Reading Buddies and we helped them pinpoint the beginning, middle, and end in their stories.
Happy Friday!!!
